Cattle and poultry slaughter at slaughter houses in Romania followed a rising trend in 2016 from the year before, with pig, sheep and goat slaughter going down.
Milk collected from farm holdings and collection facilities by processing units also increased in 2016, y-o-y, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released on Thursday.
In 2016, cattle slaughter was up 29.3 percent y-o-y, by head count, while pig slaughter went down 0.1 percent. Compared to last year, the beef production increased by 29.4 percent, while the pork production increased by 2 percent, as a result of an increase in the average weight of the slaughtered pigs.
Slaughtered sheep and goats decreased by 12.2 percent, and so did the production of mutton and goat meat, down 8.4 percent.
Poultry slaughtered at slaughter houses in 2016 increased by 1.8 percent from the year before, with poultry meat also advancing 4.2 percent.
Also y-o-y, cow's milk collected by processing operators from farm holdings and collection facilities was up 3.6 percent, or 32,655 tonnes.
Sheep and goat's milk collected in 2016 was also up on previous yearly results, with the exception of buffalo milk, which decreased by 9.4 percent. Imports of raw milk advanced 28.7 percent, or 29,007 tonnes.
Output of dairy products also followed a rising trend, with the highest increase reported by cheese (soft cottage cheese included) 5,928 tonnes (+7.3 percent). Cow's milk cheeses, making up 84.2 percent of the total cheese output, also increased.
Significant 2016 output increases y-o-y were reported in: milk for human consumption - 18,753 tonnes (+7.2 percent), butter - 734 tonnes (+6.6 percent), sour milk (yogurt, drinkable yogurt and similar) - 7,575 tonnes (+4 percent), as well as mellow cheese - 301 tonnes (+3.8 percent).
