Președintele României, Klaus Iohannis, a susținut miercuri, 20 septembrie a.c., la New York, Statele Unite ale Americii, intervenția națională în cadrul lansării Raportului comun HeForShe 10x10x10 IMPACT Champions.

Vă prezentăm în continuare textul intervenției:

Dear fellow IMPACT Champions,

Honourable Presidents and Prime Ministers,

Madam Executive Director,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is an honour for me to be part of the first generation of IMPACT Champions, at the forefront of the movement for gender equality.

Two years ago, I joined this initiative with the deepest conviction that equality between men and women represents a pillar for fair, forward-looking and cohesive societies.

The Impact Parity Report, just launched today, proves that such progress is really possible. That is why today’s event must bring a renewed commitment to advance even further gender equality in the world.

Ladies and gentlemen,

In Romania, we are fully committed to gender mainstreaming as a key element for promoting gender-sensitive policies and as a strong instrument of protection and support for victims of domestic gender-based violence.

Significant progress has been made since 2015, when I accepted the role of HeForShe IMPACT Champion. So, allow me to speak about a concrete initiative, which I believe had a positive impact and effects for the years to come. I am talking about one of Romania’s Impact Commitments, the creation of a new profession – the gender equality expert.

The main idea behind this initiative was to train specialists in the field of gender equality, in order to support measures for preventing and combating domestic violence and serve as Equality Ambassadors within our society. The need to implement this new profession came through the understanding that only an institutionalized effort would bring effective and quantifiable change of mentality.

We realized we needed to turn this initiative into a whole-of-government approach.

This is why this profession targets all the stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of public policies and it applies to all public sectors that play a role in ensuring active gender mainstreaming – social welfare, police, justice, border control, gendarmerie and penitentiary staff.

So far, over 1.100 people were trained as experts in equal opportunities, who are working with local and central public administration. By 2020, 70% of Romania’s national and local public institutions will have experts and technicians in gender equality.

To ensure the continuity of this initiative, we are currently working on a new National Strategy on Promoting Gender Equality and Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence for the years 2018-2021 and on its Operational Action Plan.

Following the country-wide positive impact of this new profession, the National Strategy will also focus on the formation of a national network of experts in this field.

Romania remains committed to sharing the lessons learned from this programme.

Before concluding, I would like to mention that in November this year I will give my high patronage, as President of Romania and HeForShe Impact Champion, to a Conference on entrepreneurship and women’s economic empowerment, organized in Bucharest together with the International Organization of La Francophonie.

This conference will be an opportunity for 400 francophone business women from 80 countries from all over the world to engage in a discussion and share experiences and good practices. As a result of this event, a platform network will be created, to allow participants to carry on the debates beyond their meeting in Bucharest.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have come very far, but there is still a great deal of work ahead of us. I urge you all to take on this challenge, because there is no sector of activity where gender mainstreaming is not necessary! So, let’s change things together!

Thank you!
