Finance Minister Ionut Misa said on Tuesday that the financial data of the banks that allegedly did not pay profit tax fall within "fiscal secret" and that these will be provided to the members of the specialized parliamentary committees under the mention of "keeping fiscal secret." "Today's legislation stipulates that this kind of information represents tax secret, and you, members of the committee, unarguably you have the right and have access to these pieces of information, and you will decide whether or not you can forward them further from this point of view. We have sent these pieces of information, in line with your requests. In the list of banks that you have seen there are banks in insolvency procedure or some of them in the bankruptcy procedure, but from the fiscal viewpoint, these are active companies for us. We monitor from a fiscal standpoint all companies submitting tax returns at the terms established by the law. (...) In some companies, you will notice that payroll taxes are still paid, depending on the stage of activity at each of the banks (...) There may be also a particular situation in which one of the business operators should sue for the fact that a fiscal secret has been disclosed," Misa told the Senate's Economic Committee.
The minister pointed out that the information would be given "subject to keeping fiscal secret, with each member of the Committee assuming the information received." He considers that public opinion should have access to "the tax situation of such a company with which they are currently interacting," but that the legislation needs to be amended in this sense.
