Former President Ion Iliescu, reports at Prosecutor`s Office: I had an amicable talk

Former president Ion Iliescu on Thursday said that he had "an amicable talk" at the Prosecutor's Office, where he was reported to be heard as witness in the 1989 Revolution file.

When asked whether he sees himself guilty of the people who died during those events, he answered:" What for? For the Romanian Revolution? (...) you must have discernment, somewhat."

Former President Ion Iliescu reported on Thursday, at the Prosecutor's Office, where he is going to be heard by the prosecutors.

According to judicial sources, Iliescu has supposedly been cited as witness in the 1989 Revolution case.

In June 2016 the High Court of Cassation and Justice upheld the Prosecutor Office's decision to reopen this case.

In April 2016 then acting Prosecutor General Bogdan Licu announced the reopening of the probe on ground that the Military Prosecution's October 2015 ruling to close the case is ungrounded and illegal "as it was adopted on the basis of incomplete investigations, while ignoring key information, data and documents relating to the events of 1989, which resulted in determining an incomplete and in some respects wrong state of facts and consequently in the erroneous legal classification thereof, which thwarted the quest for truth and the identification of all the perpetrators and of the perpetrators behind the perpetrators."

Licu maintained that the Military prosecutor's Office's way of handling the investigation shows that there was no real concern for establishing some essential aspects about the events that occurred from Dcember 17 to 30 1989.

Under an Order of November 1, 2016, military prosecutors instructed the expansion of in rem prosecution for crimes against humanity. According to prosecutors, the armed incidents taking place in a large number of localities indicate a generalised attack which in turn uphold the premise of crimes against humanity.

"The way this attack occurred shows the existence of a plan that aimed at creating a state of confusion amongst the armed forces, by dividing the leadership of the National Defence Ministry and by airing some false orders, reports and information, by taking to the streets and arming the population, by respectively creating the appearance of a "civil war" in which armed units of the National Defence Ministry and the Internal Affairs Ministry confronted each other, in view of taking over power and bringing legitimacy to the new leaders. In accomplishing this plan, the Romanian Television was called in to air alarmist, sometimes false statements, phone lines were cut and former military loyal to the new political-military leadership were placed at the head of force ministries, and the consequence was a psychological and media 'war' that resulted in numerous victims," say the military prosecutors.

According to investigators, the inquiries will be resumed regarding all actions taking place after 22 December 1989 in the entire country, according to provisions withheld in the confirmation closing regarding the reopening of the respective criminal prosecution.

On October 14, 2015, the Military Prosecution closed the case involving events of December 1989 that led to 709 people being killed, 1,855 wounded by gunshots, 343 injured in other ways, as well as to 924 people being detained. Hundreds of revolutionaries have submitted complaints to the ICCJ against this decision.
