President Klaus Iohannis considers that honest instruments are needed in order to protect the European industries of unfair competition, giving as example the international context in which the Romanian steel production stands. He explained that the European Union protection instruments in the international competition were discussed in the European Council meeting.
"Romania has still an important steel production and manufactures steel. If it were to renounce to the protection instruments, Romanian market could be flooded by very cheap steel, came especially from Asia, very cheap steel which instantaneously would kill the domestic steel production. Thousands of jobs would be lost, important capacities also and this is a thing that we can't accept. For these reasons we need protection instruments. We are not talking here about a Union protectionism compared with the one in the colonial age, we are talking about honest protection instruments to protect European industries from unfair competition," Iohannis stated at the end of the European Council meeting.
In regards to the EU agreement with the US, namely the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) Agreement, he pointed out that the majority of the Union's member states consider it good for Europe and negotiations must be continued.
