Number of part-time working Romanians doubles in past 5 years

The number of Romanians working part-time has doubled in the last five years, to over 67,000 persons in 2015, against only 30,000 persons in 2010, reveals a recent survey by the Romanian Association of Temporary Work Agents (ARAMT) released on Monday.

The ARAMT members unfold about 70pct of the temp work in Romania, recording at the end of 2015 a 270 million-euro turnover, says the study. This figure represents an increase by over 50pct against 2010, when the association was created.

"Our survey shows a doubling of the part-time employees in the past years, thus confirming the temp work viability as an economic and career solution that meets the occupational need of both the employers and the employees," said Cristina Savuica, the chairperson of ARAMT.

The part-time work is more prevalent in production (58pct) and services (27pct), as the ARAMT study indicates. The distribution by age is the same, with the young up to 25 years being the main beneficiaries of this kind of service offered by the ARAMT members (37pct). The over 45 have also grew by 4pct as a weight in the temps, with 13pct of the contracts.

The survey says that women reached 43pct of the part-time workers (against 51pct in 2010). A quality change occurred in the education background: while in 2010 most of the part-time workers (46pct) were high school graduates, and 23pct were higher school graduates, currently the ratio has reversed, namely over 53pct of the temps are university graduates, adding 12pct students. Only 12pct have not a high school diploma, while 35pct are high school or vocational schools graduates.

According to the ARAMT data, 10pct of the part-time employees are former unemployed, 34pct are persons who have previously had fixed-term employment contracts, 12pct were having permanent labour contracts, 18pct were being inactive, 12pct are students, while 14pct used to be temps before.

The study was conducted in September 2016 within ARAMT members.
