President Iohannis: Romania supports identification of sustainable Middle East solution

President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday that Romania supports efforts for the identification of a sustainable solution for the Middle East. "The Middle East Peace Process is a subject of top interest to us, given the major consequences the developments in the region have on European states included. Romania supports efforts to find a sustainable and comprehensive solution capable of meeting both the requirements of both the Israeli and the Palestinian side to live in peace and security, to develop freely in their own states," Iohannis said in a joint statement delivered with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.

The Romanian head of state noted the importance of joint efforts to combat terrorism and stressed the need for sustained measures "to prevent the spreading of extremist ideology", especially among the categories that are vulnerable to such messages. ''Education remains the most powerful instrument for channeling energies towards the generation of peace and prosperity for all, to the detriment of the proliferation of violence and hatred. Your national anthem speaks about hope, and hope grows where peace reigns. Parliament is, by excellence, the most appropriate setting for the expression of aspirations towards good understanding and finding the most appropriate ways to settle conflicts," Iohannis added.

He also said that Israel's Parliament represents a true platform of democracy and highlighted the close ties connecting Romania and Israel. In this context, the Romanian head of state reiterated the need to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between Romania and Israel. "Since we are in a forum of dialogue, I believe in the need to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between our countries in the context of the global challenges we are all facing," Iohannis said.

He emphasized that the community of Romania-born Jews has made a significant contribution to strengthening and developing the community of Israel and at the same time Romanian culture and civilization are enriched by the contribution of outstanding Jewish personalities. Iohannis also said that he is convinced that as it takes over the chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, Romania will make an important contribution to the accomplishment of the organization's goals, namely the promotion of education, the commemoration and research of the Holocaust, and said that Israel's support for the successful fulfillment of this mandate is highly important.

The Knesset Speaker thanked Romania for the support offered to Israel in all international forums. I am convinced that you will continue to stand at our side, that you will continue the fight against anti-Semitism. (...) In this regard Romania is a pioneer state in the European organizations, said Yuli Edelstein. He continued by remarking that President Klaus Iohannis is a true friend, and confessed that he too has been a teacher. We found that we have a common past. I was a teacher in the former Soviet Union. I didn't have the privilege to teach the Hebrew language and culture, but this has brought me in the position I am today, to welcome you, said the Knesset Speaker. President Iohannis began on Sunday a state visit to Israel and Palestine which will end on Friday.
