The Romanian Border Police are celebrating today 153 years of institutional existence, a moment marked at the Inspectorate General of the Romanian Border Police (IGPF) by the award of the "Border policeman of the Year 2017" title and a commendation of the operative works of outstanding professional achievements.

On this occasion, Romanian Border Police Inspector General Ioan Buda laid a wreath at the statue of ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, founder of the Border Police, and congratulated the police officers on this special day, praising their support and efforts, IGPF says in a press statement.

The Day of the Romanian Border Police represents every year an opportunity to reward the actions carried out by workers at Romania's borders.

Thus, 30 border policemen, 10 officers and 20 agents working with the Border Police operative territorial structures, specialists in border surveillance of land, sea and airport borders were commended and promoted in rank ahead of schedule for special merits on the missions carried out on Romania's soil, as well as for their participation in joint actions organised by the Frontex Agency, the IGPF statement shows.

They are said to have proved outstanding performance in the surveillance and control actions carried out at the state borders, especially in combating illegal migration and trans-border crime, having brought an important contribution operational results.

At the same time, Inspector General Buda bestowed the "Border policeman of the year 2017" title on two border policemen - Police Commissioner-in-chief Bordeianu Ioan-Dorin from the Iasi Border Police Inspectorate, the Service for Combating Illegal Migration and Trans-Border Crime, for dedication and special merits in carrying out tasks, and deputy chief police agent Toma Adrian of the Timisoara Border Police Inspectorate, border police sector Moravita for professionalism and outstanding merits in carrying out missions.

The Border Police Day was marked by similar actions in all local inspectorates at the border with each neighbouring country, the Coast Guard, as well as in training schools subordinated to the institution.

IGPF mentions that on July 24, 1864, ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed a decree that united the border watching bodies "on both sides of the Milcov River," a moment that became a historical reference point for the institution, meaning the recognition of institutional identity and, at the same time, a cornerstone of today's Border Police.

Under Government Emergency Ordinance No. 104/2001on the organisation and operation of the Border Police, this historic date was created the official holiday of the institution.
