Romanian Post unionists cease activity in several offices in Bucharest and nationwide

The Romanian Post unionists ceased activity in several offices in Bucharest and all over the country after the negotiations on Wednesday night with the company's representatives failed, General Secretary of the Postal Workers Union of Romania (SLPR) Ionel Otelea stated on Thursday for agerpres..

According to him currently a centralization of the unionists' number attending this form of protest is being made, but the current available information are indicating that the activity has been ceased in at least 20 large post offices in Bucharest. Ionel Otelea also mentioned that the unionists will be attending possible negotiations with the company's representatives if they were to be invited.

The Romanian Post unionists picketed on Wednesday morning, starting 10: 00 hrs the company's central headquarters because they were unsatisfied with the propositions which came from the company board that is conditioning the increasing of wages with lay-offs. Subsequently on Wednesday the unionists started negotiations with the company's Director, Alexandru Petrescu.

In context, Petrescu stated on Wednesday night for agerpres. that the negotiations which took place on Wednesday with the unionists were carried out in a "realistic note" compared with the company's capacity to support salary raises, and "several economic options and hypotheses" were presented.

The Romanian Post, a national company founded in accordance with the Law no. 31/1990, not being a public institution is owned both by the Romanian state through the Ministry of Communications and Information Society (MCSI) in proportion of 75 percent and by the Fondul Proprietatea (FP) in proportion of 25 percent.

The company owns the largest distribution network on a national level meaning over 80 percent of the overall postal subunits that are currently functioning in Romania. Over 19 million inhabitants benefit from the Romanian Post services and over 7.5 million addresses are covered by its own postal network.

The Romanian Post remains the company with the highest turnover of this branch, but also the largest employer in Romania with little over 25,000 employees.
