The amendment of Turkey's Constitution following a referendum is this country's sovereign decision, said on Tuesday the Senate's President, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, yet adding that the accumulation of power in one person's hand is worrying him.
"I'm always worried when an accumulation of power exists in the hand of one single person. Obviously, the formula the majority of Turkey's population has voted is not genuine. Presidential republics do exist in other parts of the world, too, but unlike the well-known formula, based on the balance of powers in the state I believe it is always preferable to the accumulation of all powers in one person's hand in the absence of offset mechanisms. But, at the end of the day it is Turkey's sovereign decision and considering that the democracy's standards are observed, I don't know if we have much to comment on this topic," said Tariceanu on Tuesday at the Senate's Seat.
The Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey (YSK) has announced on Sunday night the victory of the "Yes" side in the Constitution's amendment referendum.
