In 2021, serious road accidents recorded a decrease of 21.6% compared to the previous year, the number of people seriously injured in such events being lower by approximately 1,700, informed the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR) in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
In 2021, on public roads in Romania, there were 4,915 serious road accidents, resulting in 1,779 deaths, serious injuries to 3,790 people and minor injuries to another 2,235. Compared to 2020, in 2021, there were 1,356 fewer serious road accidents (-21.6%), while the number of people seriously injured in such events was lower by 1,692 (-30.9%), the quoted source mentions, told Agerpres.
The highest number of serious road accidents was recorded in rural areas, namely 1,915 events, 39% of the annual total, IGPR states.
Approximately one third (32.4%) of serious road accidents in 2021 are events in which pedestrians were seriously injured (1,594).
"Compared to the previous year, there is a decrease, in 2021 being recorded 315 fewer such events (-16.5%)," the Romanian Police say.
"In 61.2% of serious accidents in 2021, the fault, in whole or in part, belongs to a car driver. Just like in 2020, in 2021, pedestrians represented the most numerous victims - 32.8% out of the total of those who died. Pedestrians represent 51.3% of the people who died in accidents on the street, 28.6% in those that took place on national roads and 30% in events on county roads," the Romanian Police mention.
