Former tennis player Ion Tiriac said on Tuesday that Gheorghe Hagi, who won the title with FC Viitorul, is an example, stating that if there had been 50 people like Hagi to invest in children and juniors, now Romania would have had football players.

"Hagi is a model. Not because he has won League I, but as an example that you can bring together and raise children. If there had been 50 to the likeness of Hagi or 50 organizations similar the one Hagi has, we would have had football players by now. He got where he got because he's staying at the academy 36 hours a day. I congratulated him two days ago on the phone," he said.

FC Viitorul football team won the championship title in the 2016-2017 edition of League I to FCSB. FC Viitorul ended with the same number of points in the standings as FCSB, 44, but the tie was made after the direct results from the play-off, Hagi's team winning 3-1 on home ground and drawing in Bucharest, 1-1.

Steaua Bucharest Football club (FCSB) leadership contests FC Viitorul winning the title, because it claims that the regulation for organizing football activity (ROAF) stipulates that in the calculation of the points obtained in the direct matches with the team from Ovidiu, all the four games played in the season 2016-2017 and not only the play-off matches are taken into account, as mentioned by LPF. FCSB sponsor Gigi Becali announced on May 13 that his team is the champion, despite LPF having awarded the title to FC Viitorul, stating that he will go to the Lausanne Arbitration Tribunal for justice to be done.
