Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu told a press conference in western Cluj-Napoca that Spain is a strategic partner to Romania and it is to be hoped that negotiated solutions regarding the current situation on the Catalonia referendum are reached as soon as possible. Teodor Melescanu and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto had a working meeting, and the Romanian minister was asked about Romania's attitude with respect to the situation in Spain following the referendum for Catalonia's independence.

"Our stand has not been officially adopted, in principle we are in favour of a dialogue meant to find solutions as regards Catalonia's issue. Any such actions must observe the Constitution and the commitments undertaken must be solved through dialogue between communities and the respective states' governments. Spain is a strategic partner to us and we hope negotiated solutions regarding this issue are reached as soon as possible," Melescanu said.

He underscored, just as the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister, that the issue belongs to Spain's internal affairs. "Firstly, it is indeed an internal issue belonging to Spain. In order to cast a vote, one must know how a referendum is carried out. If this understanding doesn't exist, of course this has given rise to situations that should have been avoided," Teodor Melescanu further said.
