Justice Minister Tudorel Toader said on Tuesday that the US Department of State is expressing itself as allowed, adding that the Romanian Parliament cannot be prevented from legislating.
"With regard to the US Department of State's statement: the US Department of State is expressing itself as allowed to. I have read the statement myself and found two directions of expression. The first hypothesis, the first part reading concern about the legislation that could undermine the fight against corruption as it could weaken Romania's judicial independence. Here, of course, the statement means the entire legislation, that is the package of laws that seeks to amend justice legislation, a package of laws that are following parliamentary procedures with the select committee. Therefore, Parliament certainly cannot be prevented from legislating, because that is its mission, its exclusive power bestowed on it under the Constitution. The second hypothesis of the statement, this time in my reading, no longer means the whole package of laws, but only refers to certain legislative proposals likely to weaken the rule of law and jeopardise the fight against corruption," Toader said at the Justice Ministry.
