Canadian Ambassador in Bucharest Kevin Hamilton sent condolences to the Royal House of Romania over the death of King Mihai I, about whom he said will remain in everybody's memory as a symbol of courage, generosity and unwavering principles.

"In his entire life, through his actions and the example he have, King Mihai represented the most virtuous attributes of Romania's past. He inspired generations of Romanians when they fought for a better future for their country. His Majesty's courage in opposing fascism, and his perseverance and dignity during the decades he spent in exile, because of an oppressive communist regime, were and remain a source of inspiration for the Romanian people. For his people and for his friends around the world, His Majesty represented a source of hope during desperate times and, later, a symbol of rebirth and liberation, when Romanians regained their freedom so dramatically and Romania returned among the family of democratic European nations. Let us all learn from his example!," said the Canadian Ambassador, in a release sent on Wednesday to Agerpres.

King Mihai I, the former sovereign of Romania, died on Tuesday, aged 96, at his residence in Switzerland.
