Buzarnescu qualifies for Hobart International (WTA) women's singles quarter-finals, while Niculescu for round of 16

Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzarnescu qualified on Tuesday for the quarterfinal of the WTA tournament in Hobart (Australia), with prizes worth 226,750 US dollars, while Monica Niculescu qualified for the round of sixteen. 

Buzarnescu (aged 29, WTA's 57th) advanced to the round of sixteen by defeating German Anna-Lena Friedsam (aged 23, WTA's 507th, who was ranked 45th back in 2016), with a score of 7-5, 6-4. 

Mihaela Buzarnescu secured a cheque worth 6,175 US dollar and 60 WTA points, and for the third round her opponent will be the winner of the event between US Alison Riske and Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. 

Monica Niculescu (aged 30, WTA's 85th), who came from qualifications, defeated Romanian national Irina Begu (aged 27, WTA's 40th, 6th seed), with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Monica had previously defeated Begu, in their first face off in 2010, in the first round of Eastbourne International tournament, 6-1, 6-3. 

Begu lost her last matches to Romanian nationals, with her latest failure last week, in the semifinals in Shenzhen when she was defeated by Simona Halep. 

Niculescu secured a cheque worth 3,400 US dollars and 48 WTA points, and in the round of sixteen she is to face off Varvara Lepchenko (US).
