Romania among EU top positions by ecotax share of total tax revenues

Government ecotax revenues in EU member states amounted to 364.4 bln euro in 2016 as to 296.5 bln euro in 2006 and throughout this period the share of environmental taxes of the total government revenues from taxes and social contributions has dropped from 6.4 pct in 2006 to 6.3 pct in 2016, shows data released on Wednesday by the EU's statistics office Eurostat. 

Energy taxes accounted for over three quarters (76.9 pct) of the overall environmental tax revenue, followed by transport (19.7pct) and pollution & resource taxes (3.4 pct). 

Across the EU, the share of environmental taxes of the total government revenues from taxes and social contributions ranges from 11.7 pct in Latvia to 4.6 pct in Luxembourg. Other member states where environmental taxes account for at least 9 pct of total taxes and social contributions are Slovenia (10.6 pct), Greece (9.8 pct), Bulgaria (9.6 pct), Croatia (9.3 pct) and Romania (9 pct). 

At the opposite end, the EU countries with the lowest share of environmental taxes of the total are Luxembourg (4.6 pct), Germany (4.8 pct), France (4.9 pct), Belgium (5.0 pct) and Sweden (5.1 pct).
