Romania's Begu starts off on right foot at WTA tournament in Indian Wells

Romanian tennis player Irina Begu started off on the right foot at the WTA tournament in Indian Wells (the US), with prizes worth 8,648,508 US dollars, after defeating on Wednesday Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, in the first round, in three sets.

Begu (aged 26, WTA's 36th) scored her 3rd victory against Krunic (aged 24,WTA's 47th), whom she previously defeated in 2010, in the semis of the ITF tournament in Versmold (Germany) and in 2014, in the qualification rounds for Roland Garros.

The Romanian national secured a cheque worth 25,465 US dollars and 35 WTA points, and her next opponent will be Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, the 5th seed, who qualified directly for the second round.
