ForMin Melescanu, Chinese Deputy ForMin discuss EU-China strategic partnership

Romania's Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu welcomed China's Deputy Foreign Minister Wang Chao on Monday to discuss ways in which Romania can contribute to the advancement of the comprehensive EU-China strategic partnership, amidst Romania assuming the six-month rotating Presidency of the EU Council, on January 1, 2019.

The Chinese dignitary paid a visit to Bucharest for a new round of political and diplomatic consultations between the foreign affairs ministries of the two countries.

"The talks between the two dignitaries highlighted the prospect for a balanced growth of the Romanian-Chinese trade, the state and concerns with co-operation in sectors of common interest (energy, transport, tourism, interpersonal relations, etc.) and co-operation opportunities in the 16+1/Central and Eastern Europe - Chinese PR under projects undertaken by Romania in areas such as energy, smart cities, women's entrepreneurship and education. The meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on ways in which Romania can contribute to the advancement of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the EU and China for the time Romania holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, from January 1 to June 30, 2019," reads a press statement released by the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE).

At the same time, aspects of the Romanian-Chinese co-operation in the field of multilateral organisations were discussed, with emphasis on the United Nations.

According to MAE, the visit of the Chinese deputy foreign minister to Bucharest is part of the intensification of the political and diplomatic dialogue between Romania and China. In 2019, the two countries will mark 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, and 15 years of a comprehensive Friendship and Cooperation Partnership between Romania and the People's Republic of China.
