The memory of the victims fallen in the 1989 Revolution can only be honoured by a strong opposition to "the attacks on Justice and democratic institutions", President Klaus Iohannis said on Friday.

"In December 1989, fed up with abuse and shortages, the Romanians chose to fight in the streets for their ideals. Our fellow men and women gave their lives for us to live today in freedom and democracy. I will militate for finding the truth and punish the guilty for the crimes committed those days. History proves that no regime that humiliates and despises its own citizens, can survive. The Romanians will no longer tolerate an autocratic ruling, based on the abuse of power, corruption, incompetence and deep contempt towards the citizen. We honour the memory of the victims of the Revolution by only opposing strongly any attacks on Justice and the democratic institutions," Iohannis wrote on Friday on his Facebook page.

President Klaus Iohannis on Friday laid a wreath at the downtown University Square triptych in the memory of the 1989 Revolution's victims. There, Iohannis kept a moment of silence.
