Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said Tuesday that there is a backup option to extend the deadline for the entry into force of Government Emergency Ordinance (OUG) No.114/2018, if the amendments to be made to it are not completed before March 31, when the ordinance should come into effect.

"The budget was not built on earnings expectations under OUG No.114. I think it is normal that at this stage - and what I mean here is a very clear thing as the ordinance has yet to come into effect - we should talk with the business community to see what their concerns are and try to assuage them. (...) I have discussed the matter with Mr Dragnea as well, we both agree that some adjustments must be made so that the ordinance may achieve its objectives. (... ) We would like to complete discussions on Ordinance No.114 as soon as possible. If we do not finish by the end of the month, there is a backup solution to extend the application deadline until after we complete the discussions and the text of the ordinance," Tariceanu said at the Senate House after a meeting with officials of the Romanian Business People Association.

He added that there is already "an agreement in principle on certain changes that will have to be made."

He pointed out that the principles underpinning OUG No.114 remain valid.
