President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday said that not randomly has he chosen May 9 to organise the European People's Party and the European Union's summits, but because this is Europe Day.

"Europe arrived in Romania. (...) It is a very special moment to open the EPP Summit only a few hours ahead of the Sibiu Summit. Firstly, we shall talk about what the EU means to each of us, about our common values, what we should do if we are to take further this successful project for the welfare and safety of our citizens. The choice of the day of 9 May - Europe Day is not at all random. I've chosen Europe Day for these two meetings - the EPP Summit and the EU Sibiu Summit, and since we are all Europeans, I congratulate you on Europe Day," the Romanian president said.

According to him, so that decisions for the future can be made, one should also look back at the foundation of the European construction and the several benefits the Union has brought to its citizens.

"To Romania, the moment is historic and 30 years since the communism fall, we have brought Europe home, here, to Romania. The EPP leaders have played a paramount role in the construction of the EU, they have laid the foundation stone of this edifice and have understood that the place of the Central and East-European countries freed from communism is within the EU," Klaus Iohannis stressed.
