President Klaus Iohannis said that the boos during his speech in Iasi, at the events organized on Unification Day, show that "in Romania we have a democracy that is alive".

He stated, at the end of the manifestation in Unirii Square, that "every Romanian has the right to his opinion", stressing that the attitude of some of the participants in the events did not cause him a state of annoyance.

"I am very happy that in Romania we have a living democracy, which is manifesting itself in such a beautiful day as it is today. We were not at all upset. Every Romanian has the right to his opinion and I think that overall, things are going here, in Iasi, for the better," said Iohannis.

The president stressed that it is very sad that there are development gaps between Moldavia and other regions of the country, giving assurances that he will get involved in reducing them.

"It is very, very sad that Moldavia is a little behind and for this reason I came together with the Prime Minister and many members of the Government to show our solidarity and concern and we will solve a large part of Moldavia's problems," added the head state.

President Klaus Iohannis was booed when he arrived at the Unirii Square in Iasi by a group of protesters, but also while he was reading his speech. Also during his address, the head of state was cheered when he spoke about the priority of building the Ungheni-Iasi-Targu Mures Motorway.

Boos, as well as the ovations and applause, were also heard during the speeches of other officials, such as Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, the President of the County Council, Maricel Popa (PSD) and the mayor of Iasi, Mihai Chirica. Chants such as "We want the motorway!" and #sieu ("Me too"), a hint at the protest organized by Stefan Mandachi from Suceava regarding the situation of roads in the counties of Moldavia, could also be heard in Unirii Square.
