Deputy Prime Minister Raluca Turcan says Moldova is taking a "big step" toward Europe by electing Maia Sandu as president and that Romania will continue to show its support for the Chisinau authorities.

"I am very happy for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who elected the first woman president in the country's history. Thus, Moldova takes a big step towards Europe, comes closer to Romania and the democratic values. It is a clear signal to the political class that Moldova wants respect for the rule of law state, democracy and the European values. Maia Sandu can bring the change that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova were looking for abroad, while working very hard and enduring humiliations known only to them. Romania will continue to support the authorities in Chisinau through concrete projects and through the Romanian MEPs in Brussels in order to bring the Republic of Moldova to its rightful place as soon as possible - in Europe. Our countries have so much to offer and receive, and now we have, on both sides of the Prut, the context for a future built on European values, a future that will bring home as many of those who have gone abroad as possible," says Raluca Turcan in a press statement, on Monday.
