The Ministry of Justice announced having received on Thursday the inquiry of the Bulgarian enforcing judicial authorities about the detention conditions of fugitive Elena Udrea, should they surrender her to Romania.

"The inquiry was immediately referred to the National Administration of Penitentiaries for settlement. The National Administration of Penitentiaries will send the completed document to the Ministry of Justice, which will refer it to the Bucharest Tribunal - as the law requires - in its capacity as the issuing court of the European arrest warrant. The Bucharest Tribunal will subsequently communicate it to the Bulgarian authorities, along with its translation," the Ministry of Justice said in a release.

The Ministry said that it constantly provides assistance to all Romanian and foreign authorities involved in carrying out European arrest warrants and which seek its support, within its legal competencies and under the full observance of the independence of the judiciary, Agerpres.ro informs.

The Justice Ministry also shows full openness and availability in this case, provided that its legal role and the applicable Union legislation are complied with.

Former Minister of Tourism Elena Udrea is in the custody of the Bulgarian authorities, having been apprehended in the neighboring country after a European arrest warrant was issued on her name following her final conviction to 6 years in prison in the "Bute Boxing Gala" case.

In the same case, former president of the Romanian Boxing Federation Rudel Obreja was sentenced to five years in prison, and the administrator of the Nana estate owned by Elena Udrea was handed down a three year term in prison.
