Romania's Nicholas David Ionel qualifies for quarterfinals at Yokkaichi Challenger

Romanian tennis player Nicholas David Ionel qualified on Thursday for the quarterfinals of the challenger tournament in Yokkaichi (Japan) - the Yokkaichi Challenger, with prizes worth 53,120 USD, after defeating Japanese Shintaro Imai, with a score of 6-4, 6-4, told Agerpres.

Ionel (aged 20, ATP's 235th) needed one hour and 36 minutes to defeat his opponent Imai (aged 29, ATP's 485th).

Nicholas David Ionel secured a cheque worth 1,460 USD and 16 ATP points, whereas Filip Cristian Jianu remained with 860 USD and 7 ATP points.

In men's doubles, Nicholas David Ionel and Filip Cristian Jianu qualified on Thursday for the semifinals, after defeating the Japanese duo made up of Toshihide Matsui/Kaito Uesugi, with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-3.

In the semifinals, Ionel and Jianu, who secured 1,080 USD and 30 ATP double points, will face off Japanese pair Masamichi Imamura/Rio Noguchi.
