Romania's Defence Ministry (MApN) is this year joining public institutions and organisations from around the world that support awareness of and combating violence against women by lighting up its headquarters in Bucharest in orange on Friday at 20:00hrs to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, told Aggerpres.

MApN says that the United Nations General Assembly established November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (UN General Assembly Resolution 54/134). The day is marked all over the world by demonstrations and acts of condemnation of various forms of violence against women. In its resolution, the UN General Assembly invites governments, UN agencies, international and non-governmental organisations to hold events to draw public attention to the issue of violence against women.

It adds that it supports and promotes free and equal access to all hierarchical levels for women and men, civilian and military, with the proviso that performance and professionalism criteria are to be met.

"There is currently no limitation regarding women's access to military specialties. The recruitment of female personnel in 2022 is over 21%, the percentages of recruitment by personnel category are as follows: commissioned officers - 18.46%, petty officers - 14 .07%, non-commissioned officers - 11.09%, soldiers and professional ranks - 4.03%, contract civilian personnel/civil servants - 64.53%."
