Romania's Dringo wins bronze at Chengdu Universiade

Romanian athlete Mihai-Sorin Dringo won the bronze medal in the men's 400 m race on Thursday at the World University Summer Games in Chengdu, China, told Agerpres.

Dringo clocked in at 45.27, a personal best, losing to Portuguese Joao Ricardo Agostinho Coelho (44.79), and Australian Reece Nathaniel Holder (44.79).

In the swimming competition, compatriots Denis Popescu and Andrei Anghel qualified for the men's 50 m backstroke final. In the semi-finals, Popescu was third (25.18), and Anghel fifth (25.22).

In table tennis, the women's individual event, Tania Plaian defeated Polish Anna Janina Wegrzyn 4-1 and will play Taiwanese Tung-chuan Chien. Adina Diaconu also progressed to the round of 16, after 4-0 over Minji Oh of South Korea, and on Friday she will face Wing Lam Ng of Hong Kong.

Romania has two bronze medals, one won by the swimmer Denis Popescu in the men's 100m backstroke, and another won by runner Mihai-Sorin Dringo in the men's 400m.

China dominates the medal ranking, with 49 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze.

There are 40 athletes competing for Romania in five sports - athletics, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming and table tennis - at the 31st edition of the World University Summer Games taking place in Chengdu, China, July 28 to August 8.
