Romania sent a specialized forest fire-fighting unit to Corsica on Tuesday, with 20 firefighters with the emergency inspectorates.

According to a press release issued by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the firefighters will travel by air, with aircraft from the Ministry of National Defence, and the mission will last 15 days, agerpres reports.

"The 20 firefighters will replace colleagues from Slovenia, whose return to their home country was necessary for the management of the floods that have occurred recently. Our colleagues will leave with 3 mobility vehicles and will use the host country's intervention equipment for any missions assigned by their French counterparts," says IGSU.

A decision of the National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) was also adopted in this regard, in view of the request of the authorities of the French Republic, transmitted through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, for international assistance in the context of prepositioning of intervention teams during the summer season prone to forest fires, due to the shortfall caused by the impossibility of mobilising the specialised forest fire-fighting module from the Republic of Slovenia, which was to be deployed in the Corsica Region of the French Republic, with President Klaus Iohannis having been informed in advance.

Romania's intention to provide support was transmitted on August 11 to the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), through CECIS, by the Department for Emergency Situations, through the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.
