Romanian firefighters intervening to extinguish a fire near motorway in Greece

Romanian firefighters are intervening on Wednesday to extinguish a fire that broke out near a motorway in Greece, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) informed.

According to an IGSU press release sent to AGERPRES, around noon, at the request of the Greek authorities, Romanian firefighters intervened along a section of the motorway to Alexandroupolis to extinguish a fire affecting dry vegetation and brake in the area. Fifty-two firefighters with 10 fire-fighting vehicles are taking part in the action.

"The missions carried out consist of limiting the spread of the fire to inhabited areas, as well as maintaining a protection line between the fire front and the unaffected area. The spread of the fire is favoured by the temperatures that have remained high in recent days, as well as by the intensification of the wind," the source said.

The Romanian firefighters are acting in support of the Greek authorities under the coordination of the liaison officer, delegated to assist and ensure the smooth running of the entire mission carried out by the Romanian rescuers.
