Romania's Chirila wins C1M 500m gold at ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships

Romanian rower Catalin Chirila on Friday won the gold medal in the C1M 500m race at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany, told Agerpres.

Chirila, who advanced first to the final, clocked in at 1:45.373, an improvement over his performance last year in the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada, where he won silver in this non-Olympic event.

The CSA Steaua canoeist will also compete in the C1M 1000m Olympic event final on Saturday, where he advanced second.

The competition counts for qualification to the 2024 Olympic Games, with the first six in the final getting each a berth. Chirila is the reigning world champion in this event.
