INS: Romania's population, by residence, 21.873 million people on July 1, 2023

Romania's population, calculated by residence, reached 21.873 million people on July 1, 2023, down 0.3% compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), published Friday.

The official statistics reveal that the urban population was 12.239 million people, down -0.8% from July 1, 2022. At the same time, the rural population was 9.634 million people, up 0.3% from the reference period.

According to the cited source, on July 1, 2023, the female population stood at 11.2 million, down by more than 34,000 year-on-year, while the male population was 10.673 million, down by more than 35,000.

The INS data show that the demographic ageing process has intensified compared to July 1, 2022, with a 0.4 percentage point increase in the share of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) and a slight 0.1 percentage point decrease in the share of young people (aged 0-14).

At the same time, the demographic ageing index increased from 121.1 (on July 1, 2022) to 124.9 elderly persons per hundred young persons (on July 1, 2023).

According to the INS, the average age of the population was 42.4 years during the period under review, 0.3 years higher than on July 1, 2022, and the median age was 43 years, up by 0.4 years.

At the beginning of July this year, the largest share of the total population was in the 45-49 age group (8.5%). Among men, the share of this age group was 8.9% and among women, 8.2%.

The share of the 0-4 age group was 4.5%, lower than that of the 5-9 age group (4.9%) and the 10-14 age group (5%).
