Reducing corruption is vital to Romania's prosperity, security and general development, and parliamentary immunity should not be abused or misused to protect anyone, the U.S. Embassy said in a response to a request by Agerpres for comments on Parliament's vote in the case of deputy Cristian Rizea.

As we have already said many times, reducing corruption is vital to Romania's prosperity, security and general development. Although we do not comment on individual cases, an essential principle of democracy provides that all people are equal before the law. Parliamentary immunity should not be abused or misused to protect anyone, the Embassy said in a statement.

The Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday rejected by a vote of 120 to 105 and one invalidated vote the request of the National Anticorruption Directorate to have the Social Democrat MP Cristian Rizea placed under pre-trial arrest.
