"The Icon of the Mother of God with the Child in Her Arms" painted by Nicolae Grigorescu during the period in which he worked for the Agapia Monastery is put up for auction on December 9 by Artmark, with a starting price of 18,000 euros, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
According to the auction house, alongside this central piece, the event brings together an important Transylvanian collection of icons on glass with works by illustrious painters Petru din Toparcea, Constantin Boghina Jr., Matei Tamforea, Pavel Zamfir and Ioan Pop din Fagaras. At the same time, there will be auctioned for the first time the icon signed by Nicolae Furnica, which has recently been discovered. This discovery of this icon and its paternity also contributed to the reattribution of a series of icons previously considered as coming from the workshops of the Fagaras-Rupea area.
''The collection of lawyer Constantin Visinescu is distinguished by its rigor, coherence and rarity, having been built over more than three decades, and can be considered a landmark of private Romanian sacred art, as it brings together some of the most representative icons on glass of the Transylvanian and Wallachia schools from the 18th-19th centuries, carefully selected for authenticity, state of conservation and iconographic value,'' specifies the same source.
Also present in the selection of this auction are two collector's items that belonged to writer Ion Minulescu - a wooden icon "Saints Constantine and Helena", made by the Romanian School in the first half of the 19th century, with tempera and gold leaf (starting price 300 euros) and to the former politician Corneliu Vadim Tudor - the Greek triptych icon "Our Lady with the Child, Saint George and Saint Demetrius", made in 1891 (starting price 700 euros).
This year's Christmas auction takes place on December 9, both at the Cesianu-Racovita Palace and online, on the Artmark Live Platform
