The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) on Wednesday called for an end to any attempt to link the party to the violence at the September 15 protest in Bucharest's Victoriei Square, saying responsibility for violent acts should be individual.
"We are witnessing a succession of claims seeking to associate AUR with the violence that occurred at the September 15 protest in Victoriei Square. People who have not been members of AUR for years are being publicly presented as 'AUR members' in an attempt to artificially establish a link between the party, AUR President George Simion and the violence at the protest. We categorically deny that the two people placed in pre-trial detention following last week's protest are AUR members, that they were brought to the demonstration by AUR or that they acted at the party's urging. AUR did not incite violence, and our message was clear: peaceful protest," the party said in a statement sent to AGERPRES.
AUR also claimed that "prosecutors appear to have a very clear agenda regarding these hearings", saying participants had been questioned about possible links to George Simion and AUR and whether he had incited them to violence.
"We call on prosecutors and state law-enforcement institutions to put an end to this orchestrated plan and to any attempt to artificially construct political blame for AUR and George Simion. Anyone who committed acts of violence must be held individually accountable before the law, but the investigation cannot be turned into an instrument for fabricating a link to the main opposition party," AUR said.
Prosecutors with the Bucharest Tribunal Prosecutor's Office decided on Tuesday to ask judges to order the pre-trial detention of ten people who allegedly took part in violent incidents during last week's protest in Victoriei Square.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against a total of 20 people, who were detained for 24 hours and are being investigated, as applicable, for offences including assaulting a public official, assault or other acts of violence, disturbing public order and criminal damage, according to prosecutors.
