AUR First Vice-President Dan Dungaciu believes that Romania is "closer" to snap elections following the nomination of Siegfried Muresan for the position of Prime Minister by President Nicusor Dan.
"We welcome the fact that there is a nomination, as we are returning to the normal course of events and entering a logical process. Admittedly, it is rather late. We will not vote for the Muresan Cabinet, given the previous statements by the parties supporting him that they would not negotiate with AUR. However, we are pleased that a vote is taking place, and we view the prospect of snap elections with optimism. That would be the next step following the failure of this nomination. Snap elections are closer now, following this nomination," Dan Dungaciu told AGERPRES.
Dungaciu believes it is possible that the current prime ministerial nomination "might not even reach a vote in Parliament," and that if it does come to a vote, the candidate will not secure the necessary number of votes for investiture.
AUR spokesperson and MP Stefanita Avramescu says that "the idea of snap elections is gaining momentum". "AUR will not vote for such a nomination. I believe I have stated this countless times. We will not vote for any nomination that does not include or involve usleast of all this one. For the time being, I am not convinced the matter will even reach a vote in Parliament. It is certain that AUR will not get involved in forming or voting for a government with such a candidate. I do not know the President's thinking on this matter, but we have said it before and we repeat it: early elections are paramount. Not just for us, but for Romania," Avramescu explained.
According to Avramescu, "political tension in Romania is currently at its peak, and societal tension is unprecedented."
"If you look at the polls, over 90% of people say Romania is heading in the wrong direction. We must put an end to this crisis as soon as possible," Avramescu stated.
President Nicusor Dan designated on Thursday MEP Siegfried Muresan for the position of Prime Minister.
