Leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, on Thursday said that the party risks ending up in the same position as formations such as Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party (PNTCD) or the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) if it agrees to become an "auxiliary party" to another political formation.
"There are several targets here. The Social Democratic Party, its leadership, in order to carry out its parliamentary manoeuvres, once again needs a critical mass. A critical mass that, if possible, would not sound bad before Europe, so a kind of auxiliary party, and we must admit that the PNL, in past years, through its association with the PSD in government for many years, has lost its profile, has often forgotten whom it represents, and has lost the trust of citizens, as evidenced by election results and the fact that only in extremis, in the space of a week, from the presidential elections to the parliamentary elections in November, did we manage to recover some of our voters. But in any case, the party has declined in these years. So there is a need for an auxiliary party," Bolojan said on Rock FM, when asked whether he is the sole target of this motion of censure or whether the Save Romania Union (USR) is also targeted.
He added that if the PNL were to accept becoming an auxiliary, hinge-type party, it would risk repeating the fate of parties that have disappeared or become irrelevant.
"Removing the leadership of a party or establishing a party's leadership in locations other than its own headquarters means that the party becomes an auxiliary party, a hinge-type party, and the National Liberal Party, if it has not learned its lesson and were to accept such a situation, would end up like PNTCD or ALDE. This is obvious, because people want to have confidence in what they vote for and want to see that that political grouping has an identity and supports certain projects," the Prime Minister explained.
He described the current situation as a confrontation between "old habits" and the need for transparency and fairness. According to Bolojan, if such problems persist, there will certainly be "further escalations."
"If we do not continue with normal measures, to reduce our spending, to meet the milestones for European funds, to complete projects, to eliminate waste, we will return to where we started. It will not take two, three or four months before the PSD again finds reasons to claim that things are not going well and that someone is to blame. Once trust has been lost, no one has any guarantees that a new political crisis will not arise, and those who have generated it are no longer in a position to be trusted, because they have demonstrated this lack of seriousness and avoidance of responsibility several times so far," Ilie Bolojan also said.
