The National Railway Company "CFR" SA announced that the conditions have been met to begin the design and construction works for the modernisation of the Bucharest Progresu - Jilava - Giurgiu Nord - Giurgiu Nord Frontiera railway line, part of the European TEN-T transport network.

According to a company release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, the contract was signed on 14 August 2025 with the RailWorks Consortium, made up of Arcada Company S.A. and Alstom Transport S.A., with Arcada Company S.A. as the lead partner, for a value of over 2.108 billion lei excluding VAT.

The total duration of the contract is 158 months, including six months for design, 30 months for construction, 120 months for the warranty period, and two months for activities required after final approval of the works.

The completion of the works and the reopening of rail traffic on this section are estimated for September 2028.

"The project provides for the rehabilitation and modernisation of the railway infrastructure on lines 103 and 106A, along the Bucharest Progresu - Jilava - Giurgiu Nord - Giurgiu Nord Frontiera route. The works include electrification of the line, modernisation of signalling systems and the implementation of the ERTMS [European Rail Traffic Management System] Level 2, with its analysis and integration into the complex Bucharest railway hub. These measures will increase safety levels, improve traffic capacity and ensure interoperability with the European railway network," the release said.

In order to ensure the works are carried out safely, as of 16 March 2026 train traffic will be fully suspended on the Jilava - Fratesti section, between shunting signal M4 at Jilava station and entry signal X at Fratesti halt. During the rail traffic interruption, passenger transport will be provided via shuttle minibuses. In the next stages of the project, similar measures will be applied on the Bucharest Progresu - Jilava and Fratesti - Giurgiu Nord Frontiera sections.

According to the quoted source, the railway line represents a strategic connection for international rail transport. It links the Rhine - Danube corridor with the South-East Europe region, crossing the border into Bulgaria via the Friendship Bridge. The modernisation of this infrastructure contributes to increasing economic competitiveness, promoting sustainable mobility and integrating Romania's rail transport into the European Union single market.

CFR SA mentioned that the implementation of this project is carried out in accordance with European technical standards and complies with all requirements regarding rail traffic safety.
