Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, said on Monday, at the end of consultations at Cotroceni Palace, that the UDMR will not be part of the next Executive, but could support a government built around the Social Democratic Party (PSD), adding that the National Liberal Party (PNL) would also be needed in that scenario.
"We will not be part of the next government, almost 100 percent. I rule this out for one reason. Last week, we went to Parliament with a designated prime minister, Siegfried Muresan, with a minority coalition, and it did not pass. Tomorrow, we cannot be part of another coalition. This is not about the PSD, nor about the PNL, it is about a matter of principle. You cannot jump from one train to another within a week. Has something changed? Nothing has changed. But we can back a government around the PSD, but the PNL is also needed. Or part of the PNL - I am not talking about the 16 dissenters, but about PNL assuming responsibility. And if it does not do so institutionally, they say that not all of the PNL will vote, but if - let's say - 40 votes are needed for the government's investiture, we can secure those votes together, so that the government passes. And afterwards, each of us goes about their own business. This is also a possibility for each of us," the UDMR leader said, agerpres reports.
He emphasized that the current situation can no longer go on.
"We do not want the caretaker government to remain in office any longer, because it does not even have the constitutional authority to initiate a budget revision. We have been already close to a deadlock since weeks, even months, and this situation can no longer be prolonged. We are waiting for the nomination, and once we know the name of the prime minister-designate, we will certainly be able to say more," Kelemen Hunor added.
