La Francophonie should serve as a model of transparent, efficient and creative governance, former prime minister Dacian Ciolos said on Monday after being nominated by President Nicusor Dan for the position of Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

"I accept this nomination with a strong sense of responsibility towards the Francophone community and our shared values. In a rapidly changing world, where long-standing historical balances are being called into question, I propose a modern, pragmatic and inclusive Francophonie, guided by bold realism and capable of acting as a credible player in rebuilding multilateralism based on respect for human rights," Ciolos wrote on Facebook.

Dacian Ciolos stressed that, building on the French language as a common foundation, La Francophonie should better harness the regional strengths and networks of its member states and governments - economic, educational and human - while strengthening interregional cooperation and collaboration among Francophone operators.

"I propose a pragmatic, human and forward-looking approach, supported by young people, in which our shared language contributes to economic development, technological innovation and new forms of knowledge, while also fostering a climate of respect where women's rights and access to education are priorities. My objective is simple: to make La Francophonie more useful, more modern and more united. La Francophonie has the vocation to assert itself as a space of synergy and cohesion among states, institutions, civil society and economic actors. The role of the Secretary General is to harness this collective energy," Ciolos stressed.

In his view, trust among peoples and partners is built through competence and integrity, and this ambition can only be achieved through the involvement of all relevant actors in the Francophone space.

"Young people must become the driving force of our projects. Women, often invisible yet always playing an essential role, must be fully recognised as pillars of development and social cohesion in our communities. In conclusion, the vision I propose is that of a balanced Francophonie that embraces the future with boldness," Dacian Ciolos said.
