The Minister of National Defense, Ionut Mosteanu, declared on Tuesday that "the American presence is and will remain" in Romania and the United States is the main strategic partner in defense.
"I want to say one more thing, related to the American presence: the American presence is and will remain here. It remains at the previous level or a little above the level before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The essential things and the essential defense capabilities remain operated with the American presence in Kogalniceanu, Deveselu and Campia Turzii. These are the things we must take into account. The United States of America is the main strategic partner in defense. Nothing has changed here, we have the most, most modern military equipment capabilities on the endowment side, they have come, they continue to come and we have a time horizon, in the next seven to eight years American equipment will continue to come to the territory of Romania", said Mosteanu, Parliament.
He added that foreign relations "do not strengthen or weaken overnight."
"Foreign policy does not happen overnight and foreign relations do not happen overnight, they strengthen or weaken overnight. It is an effort that Romania could have done better in recent years. In the four months I do not believe that I could have done more than I have done since I have been in this position. If the expectation is that foreign policy will change immediately with the change of one minister or another, it is an unrealistic expectation. We must make the effort to stay close to all allies, all partners. We have a very good relationship with the United States of America, a relationship that continues and is strengthening," stated the Minister of Defense.
Asked what will happen to the Mihail Kogalniceanu base, Ionut Mosteanu replied: "The Kogalniceanu base is a mainly Romanian investment. Part of the base was at the disposal of the American allies, which they managed from an administrative point of view, from all points of view, and those who remain there will continue to remain there, the air support group, and they manage it together."
