Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development, Public Administration and European Funds Sevil Shhaideh on Tuesday welcomed German ambassador in Bucharest Cord Meier-Klodt, saying that the relationship with Germany is of strategic importance to Romania.

The Ministry of Regional Development, Public Administration and European Funds (MDRAPFE) quotes Shhaideh as stressing that deepening of dialogue and cooperation between the two countries is a priority to Romania, voicing readiness for mutual support on topics of interest, both within the EU and at regional and international level.

"Cooperation between the two countries is based on a constant concern with maintaining a pragmatic and functional relationship, based on mutual trust and predictability," says MDRAPFE.

In his turn, the foreign diplomat expressed satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations and the position of Germany as Romania's number one foreign trading partner. Moreover, according to the ministry, he expressed his interest "in strategic areas of cooperation, especially infrastructure, education and vocational training that can offer economic opportunities to the less developed regions of Romania and make them more attractive for investment." Ambassador Meier-Klodt also expressed his readiness to concentrate his efforts especially on such strategic objectives.

The ministry adds that 2017 has a special symbolism for the Romanian-German relationship: on April 21, 25 years have past since the signing of the bilateral treaty on friendly cooperation and partnership in Europe. The 50th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties between Romania and Germany and the 10th anniversary of Romania's European Union membership are also celebrated in 2017.

Germany is the first trading partner of Romania, with a fifth of the volume of foreign trade in Romania. Germany is also the third foreign investor in the Romanian economy, with 4.557 billion euros and 11.5 percent of the total investment. Over the last five years, the upward trend of bilateral trade has been maintained, with an average growth of about 10-11 percent per year, with similar annual increases in annual exports (10-11 percent a year), according to MDRAPFE.
