Timis County Prefect Elena Micicoi declared on Friday, after the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) carried out a search at her home, that she has no procedural status in the investigation - not even as a witness - and that no accusations have been brought against her.
Micicoi described the action as "procedural checks", adding that she does not hold documents relevant to the case and that information circulated publicly in a truncated or tendentious form amounts to "manipulation meant to mask major political interests".
The checks reportedly concern funding for a private services project implemented before Micicoi became prefect, in which she was not the project manager.
"In the EPPO investigation, these are procedural verifications in a case where I do not have even the status of witness, I was not subpoenaed, and no accusations have been communicated to me. There was no assumption that I would hold or withhold documents needed for the investigation. Neither at the association's office, nor at my home were any materials found to support the hypothetical accusations circulated in the media," Micicoi wrote on Facebook. She said that the project "Employment and Professional Integration Services for At-Risk, Marginalised Persons in the GAL Freidorf Area" was run by the Pro Office association, which she headed at the time, but she did not serve as project manager. A reimbursement was made for an amount deemed ineligible, she added, within the legal deadline.
Micicoi said the project had been verified by the Ministry of European Investment and Projects. Verification reports from August 2024 and May 2025 confirmed that the association complied with project requirements, she noted.
The prefect argued that media references to a possible financial loss distort the facts. "In reality, only a court can establish a damage, after the investigation is completed, if the case even reaches court. Project funds were used according to the financing application, as confirmed by the verification reports," she said, adding that the circulation of truncated or tendentious information is "a form of manipulation aimed at masking major political interests" and undermines trust in public institutions and the press.
