Minister of National Defence Mihai Fifor on Monday received at the headquarters of the Defence Ministry his Latvian counterpart Raimonds Bergmanis, who is currently paying an official visit to Bucharest, the discussion topics focusing on cooperation in the defence field both at bilateral level and within NATO and the EU, as well as the signing of a new military cooperation agreement between the defence ministries of the two states.
The Romanian official started the discussions by saying that "the setting up of the NATO structures, both in Romania and in Latvia, alongside those in Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland, have sent a powerful signal of allied reassurance and solidarity, in the current complex international context," reads a release of the MApN. In this context, Minister Fifor underscored his determination to increase the level of efficiency of the Romanian Armed Forces, including through endowment with modern systems and equipment.
"The two officials confirmed their common desire to strengthen cooperation between the two states in all areas, including through the development of multinational military capabilities projects, to be carried out at the level of the international structures which both Romania and Latvia belong to. On this occasion the two ministers signed a new Agreement between the Ministry of National Defence of Romania and the Ministry of National Defence of the Latvian Republic regarding cooperation in the military field, which document will allow the identification and capitalization on new opportunities of cooperation between the two states in the defence field," reads the release.
