A special screening of the film "Jaful secolului" / "Traffic", directed by Teodora Ana Mihai and written and produced by Cristian Mungiu, Romania's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, will be held in Los Angeles by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
According to a press release from ICR New York sent to Agerpres on Tuesday, the event will take place at the Royal Laemmle cinema in Santa Monica, one of the most well-known Angeleno venues for arthouse film screenings, and will be attended by the director, who will meet the American public and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, agerpres reports.
The film "Jaful secolului" / "Traffic" is set in the Netherlands, where Ginel (Ionut Niculae) and Natalia (Anamaria Vartolomei) have gone to work. Here they reunite with their fellow villagers Ita (Rares Andrici) and Adrian (Robert Iovan), "tough guys" who live off what their girlfriends earn and from small hustles. When Natalia is attacked in a club, Ita convinces Ginel that they have the right to take revenge. Tired of being treated as second-class citizens, the three plan a heist. In less than two minutes, they steal paintings worth over 20 million euros. However, things soon become more complicated, according to the film synopsis.
So far, "Jaful secolului" / "Traffic" has opened Romanian film festivals in Washington, Minneapolis and Vancouver, events co-organised and co-financed by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. The film will also open this year's edition of the independent Making Waves festival in New York.
All screenings aim to increase the film's visibility in the United States and Canada, a crucial factor for its inclusion on the Academy's initial shortlist of Oscar nominations, which will be announced in the second half of December.
"Jaful secolului" / "Traffic" has won the Grand Prize at the Warsaw International Film Festival, the Best Actress Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival for Anamaria Vartolomei, the Balkan Film Award (best film in the Balkan competition) at the Sofia International Film Festival, and the Audience Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
