The 2026 draft budget is built on an estimated deficit of 6.2 percent of GDP, or 127.7 billion lei, a level expected to fall to 5.1 percent of GDP in 2027, according to the document published by the Finance Ministry, according to Agerpres.
Gross Domestic Product is projected to grow by 1 percent, reaching 2,045 billion lei in 2026.
The Finance Ministry expects revenues to rise from 34.7 percent to 36 percent of GDP, estimated at around 736.5 billion lei in 2026, while total expenditures of the consolidated general budget are projected to increase to 864.3 billion lei (42.3 percent of GDP) from 808.7 billion lei. The rise in expenditures is mainly driven by investments, European funds and the costs of financing public debt generated by budget deficits in recent years, rather than by increases in the state's operational spending.
On Tuesday, the Finance Ministry published the package of documents related to the 2026 consolidated general budget draft to ensure transparency, built on principles of fiscal responsibility, balance and sustainable economic development.
