Mountain runners are expected on Sunday at the first edition of the Cheile Turzii Race, a sporting event dedicated to outdoor exercise and discovering the spectacular landscapes of the Trascaului Mountains.

"Organized by the Romanian Obstacle Course Racing Association, in partnership with Transylvania Mountains Project and with the support and specialized assistance of the County Public Service Salvamont-Salvaspeo Cluj, an entity under the authority of the Cluj County Council, the event proposes two mountain running races: 9 km Cross - with an elevation gain of about 700 m; 23 km Half Marathon - with an elevation gain of about 1,400 m," reads a press release of the Cluj County Council.

According to the cited source, the routes are technical, with a degree of difficulty ranging from medium to advanced, being a challenge for both experienced runners and for those who are just starting out. The races take place on marked tourist trails, forest roads and public roads, with appropriate signage. Along them, runners will be able to enjoy the beauty of the gorge of Cheile Turzii, the area of the Ciucas waterfall, the Hasdate valley and the forests that cover the spectacular limestone of Trascaului Mountains.

"The main objectives of the event are to promote Cheile Turzii Nature Reserve, to encourage outdoor exercise and mountain sports, to educate for the protection of the environment, and to discover and promote the natural landscapes of the area. More than 210 runners are expected to participate in this competition, and the organizers put a special emphasis on protecting the environment, with the whole area to be cleaned after the event, left exactly as it was found," the Cluj County Council further informed.
