The average fixed internet data download speeds increased by almost 45pct in the first half of 2017, compared with the first half of 2016, from 75.07 Mbps to 109.1 Mbps, the National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority (ANCOM) reported in a press statement released on Monday.
At the same time, average mobile data download speeds dropped by 28pct, from 27.72 Mbps to 19.99 Mbps, amid an increase in the number of user tests on this segment and data traffic through mobile networks. The H1 2017 fixed and mobile internet statistics were generated by Netograf.ro - the ANCOM application for testing internet access service quality - based on a total of 135,000 valid tests conducted by internet users in Romania.
"Statistics on internet access service quality in Romania generated by Netograf.ro - the ANCOM internet access quality testing application - shows that in the first half of 2017 Romanians experienced average national fixed internet data download speeds of 109 Mbps, with average download speeds of 180 Mbps for wired connections and 60 Mbps for wireless connections," according to ANCOM.
ANCOM recommends users who want to test their fixed connections to use wire-connected terminal equipment. The average speeds for wireless connections are about three times lower than for wired connections due to the limited transmission capacity of wireless routers (usually offering nominal speeds of up to 300 Mbps). In addition, for Wi-Fi speed is negatively affected by the distance to the wireless transmitter /router and the presence of obstacles between the terminal and the transmitter, the statement says.
