The Government approved, in a meeting on Friday, through a Decision, the technical and economic indicators related to the investment objective "Extension of the metro network, Metro Line 4, Gara de Nord - Gara Progresul Section", the duration of the works being 50 months.

"The length of the newly built route will be about 12 km, of which approximately 11 km will be in operation with passengers and approximately 1.1 km in operation without passengers - the connection with the Progresul Depot. The Gara de Nord - Gara Progresul section will have 13 stations and a newly built aboveground depot, plus the Gara de Nord 2 station. The connection with the existing Metro Line 4 will be made at the Gara de Nord 2 station by continuing the axes of the existing Line 1 and Line 2 tracks," a Government statement said.

The total value of the investment is over 17 billion lei, and the financing will be made from Non-Reimbursable External Funds (NEF), the 2021-2027 Transport Program, from the state budget, through the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as well as from other legally established sources, within the limits of the amounts approved annually for this purpose.

"The extension of metro line 4 from Gara de Nord to Gara Progresul was designed as a junction between regional, national and international rail transport with the urban area. The construction of this line will create the largest and most important metro line on the north-south axis of the city, which will connect the Otopeni and Bucharest Băneasa International Airports with the Băneasa, Basarab, Gara de Nord and Gara Progresul railway stations and, implicitly, the interconnection with surface public transport. The construction of the Gara de Nord - Gara Progresul section will lead to time savings in urban passenger transport, reduced CO2 emissions, reduced air pollution, and reduced the risk of road accidents," the press release further states.
