Hagi: The ambition of the current generation should be to surpass us
Former international football player Gheorghe Hagi said, after Romania's 1-0 win over Switzerland on Tuesday evening at the National Arena that the ambition of the current Romanian football side should be to surpass the performances of the Golden Generation, told Agerpres.
"All we achieved in America was to leave a mark for another generation to come and do more things than we did. That's why it is history , so you can outperform. Their ambition should be, to surpass us," said Hagi.
The leader of the Golden Generation praised the national team's performance in the EURO 2024 preliminaries and coach Edward Iordanescu, who managed to add strength to the group.
"Everyone was waiting for this, for a long time Romania has needed qualification, performance, because that's the only way enthusiasm can come and we can progress day by day. We have to progress, to be better, reach the European level. We are going to Germany to root for them, it's a very good group. It's to the credit of Edi Iordanescu one hundred percent because he formed this group, my congratulations and may he keep it that way. The big challenge will come from now on, because the opponents will be increasingly better, and they will have to up the ante."
Romania won Group I of the EURO 2024 preliminaries after defeating Switzerland 1-0 (0-0) on Tuesday evening at the National Arena in Bucharest.
They prevailed with a goal scored by Denis Alibec (50) and finished the group undefeated, going to be in the second place in the draw on December 2 for the groups of the final tournament in Germany.
Romania will be at a final tournament of the European Championship for the sixth time, after the editions of 1984, 1996, 2000, 2008 and 2016.
